Date for CSS 2009 exam extended
CSS exams postponed until April 25
Islamabad, March 11: The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) on Monday announced that the Central Superior Services examination (CSS 2009) would commence from April 25 instead of March 14 as was previously planned.
Without giving any reason for the change in the date, the FPSC said in a handout that: "The FPSC has decided to postpone the CSS 2009, which was scheduled to be held from March 14. The examination shall now be held with effect from Saturday, April 25, 2009."
The FPSC employees had gone on strike against its secretary, Bashir Ahmad Chohan and DG (administration) Raja Pervez Akhtar, and accused them of working against employees' interests.
The employees remained on strike for 12 days. They resumed their duties on Monday upon assurances by the Islamabad administration and PPP Islamabad president Babar Minhas that their demands would be met by the commission's high-ups.
The strike seems to be the main reason for the postponement of the examination. However, a senior official of the commission said, that ongoing political unrest was another concern. Dawn

Lahore: The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) on Monday postponed competitive exam CSS 2009 in the wake of lawyers' long march and strike by employees of the commission against high officials.
The exam, earlier scheduled to start from March 14, will now be held with effect from April 25. The detailed date sheet would be announced in the coming few days. According to sources, high-ups of the Federal Public Service Commission held a successful dialogue with the protesting employees on Monday and assured them that their grievances would be addressed following which they announced to end the strike.
The sources further said that another important factor which caused postponement of the CSS exam was the long march scheduled to start from March 12. It is important to mention here that strike was being observed in all the provincial headquarters of the FPSC, including central office, and it seemed impossible to make arrangements for the upcoming competitive exams without active participation of all the offices.
The sources informed that owing to the strike, roll number slips of around 2,000 candidates could not be dispatched, adding that in such a situation, it was impossible to hold the exam. An FPSC member, seeking anonymity, said provision of peaceful environment to the candidates during the exam was responsibility of the commission. He said since the exam dates were overlapping with dates of the long march, it was impossible to ensure smooth conduct of exams. The ongoing strike by the employees was also adding to the troubles of the commission, he added.
It is important to mention here that the FPSC employees were protesting against the commission's higher authorities for their alleged corrupt policies. They had also been demanding cancellation of amendments made to the recruitment rules, raising the quota of BS-17 posts for steno typists to 20 per cent and increase in invigilation fees, etc.
The commission had also warned protesting employees of legal action but they took a firm stand and continued their protest. The sources said the FPSC chairman would address the commission's employees on March 11 (Wednesday), adding that a reshuffle on the administrative front was also likely since the employees had been protesting against some senior officers.
When contacted, Federal Public Service Commission Secretary Bashir Ahmad Chohan said the employees had started working in their offices from Monday after they had been assured that their grievances would be addressed. He further said issuance of roll number slips to around 2,000 candidates was under process, adding that detailed date sheet of the rescheduled exam would be announced in few days. The News
