Irked over delayed proceedings in the corruption trial against members of the Sharif family, the Supreme Court on Friday gave the accountability court till December 24 to wrap up the proceedings and announce a verdict.
A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Faisal Arbab, heard the plea seeking the eight extension to conclude the remaining two references – Al Azizia and Flagship – against deposed premier Nawaz Sharif and his family members in light of the apex court’s Panamagate verdict.
During the hearing, the chief justice expressed his displeasure over the delay in conclusion of the trial. “You keep returning for extensions. Are you writing a love story?”
Khawaja Haris, counsel for Nawaz, sought an extension of 10 working days to conclude arguments in the case. Upon which the chief justice observed that the lawyer had also shown an intention of recusing himself from the case and termed the move delaying tactics.
“It is impossible for me to conclude arguments. I am not as active as you,” replied Haris. “How long do you need to wrap up the arguments?” asked Justice Nisar.
The lawyer said he would finish arguments by December 17. Factoring in four days for Judge Arshad Malik to pen down the verdict, the bench gave the accountability court till December 24 to announce the judgment.
