Sleepless in Bollywood

Bollywood has only two self-confessed insomniacs — one is Amitabh Bachchan and the other is Shah Rukh Khan.

For years now the sleeping habits or rather the waking habits of these two phenomenons has been discussed endlessly.

That the Big B reads or blogs incessantly through the night, and that SRK plays games or tweets till sunrise, is something everyone knows. However, a new breed of sleepless beauties and hunks have now descended on tinsel town. Some by default, others by design.

Vidya Balan says, “I’m very much a night bird. If you message or call me at night, I’ll promptly answer. But try doing this to me in the morning and you won’t even get a response.” Vidya also reads late into the night and on occasion has long winding chats with her friends including designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

Aamir Khan and Salman Khan also (and only) socialise post midnight. Sources say when Aamir keeps his security staff waiting after 11.30 pm, you should know he is likely to pay a visit to Salman’s Galaxy Apartments. The two buddies then go pub crawling (now Aamir doesn’t drink) and motorbike riding in the middle of the night. Their sessions usually end with Salman landing up at Aamir’s home in the wee hours. Of course, if Aamir’s wife Kiran Rao Khan is home, then the early morning activity continues at Salman’s bachelor pad.
Oscar winner A R Rahman had shocked Subhash Ghai years ago when he called him for a music sitting at 5 am. Now it is an accepted norm that Rahman will only entertain filmmakers post midnight. So the best of Bollywood — be it Mani Ratnam, Rakeysh OmPrakash Mehra, Ashutosh Gowariker or Aamir spend their nights flying to and fro Mumbai-Chennai when they have to deal with the music wizard.

Kareena Kapoor, who hates Mumbai by day, unless she is shooting in the maximum city, says, “Saif and I have to go for our coffees at night because it has become impossible for actors to move around normally during the day. There are hardly any private eating places left. It is easier to move around the five stars hotels late at night because they’re less crowded.” Bebo can also be spotted with her close group of friends like Tusshar Kapoor and Manish Malhotra having a cuppa at the local coffee shop at 1.30 am.
Hrithik Roshan, who is a part of SRK’s ‘inner circle’, keeps up late at night because very often he and the band of boys including Arjun Rampal, Karan Johar, Uday Chopra and Sanjay Kapoor land up at Mannat for a night cap.

Shahid Kapoor is known to make nocturnal visits to filmmakers and Sanjay Dutt doesn’t believe in sleeping before 5 am. When Sanju Baba is drinking, then his sessions end at 5 am. If he is on the wagon then Sanju watches the IPL matches till midnight. And, often wines and dines his close friends at home. If he’s in the mood, he even gets into the kitchen to cook up something. Neighbours say Baba loves blasting his music till the cows come home.

Most of Bollywood now prefers to hit the Mumbai streets in the safety of the night. The only two huge stars who sleep tight by 10.30 are health freaks Akshay Kumar and Rekha. Akki truly believes that the early morning bird gets the worm.

And as for Rekha, sources say she will not compromise on her beauty sleep for anyone or anything in the world. The majority of the movie-making folk have, however, made night the new day. Many of them confess that they often go to bed after reading the BT each morning!
