Turkish minister calls on President Zardari

ISLAMABAD: Turkish minister of state for science, technology and Information Prof. Mehmet Aydin called on President Asif Ali Zardari here at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Minster for commerce, Hina Rabbani Khar, Minister of State for Finance Economic Affairs and M. Salman Faruqui, Secretary General to the President. Turkish Ambassador in Islamabad Mr.Mustafa Babur Hezlan was also present.

The President welcomed the visiting minister and expressed the hope that Pak- Turkey Joint Ministerial Commission being held in Islamabad would prove instrumental in further boosting the level of economic cooperation between the two countries.

He said that the current level of trade of US$ 600 million between the two countries is far below the existing potential and stressed for early finalization of Preferential Trade Agreement to further enhance the level of trade and commercial ties between the two countries.

The President invited the Turkish investors to undertake joint venture projects in Infrastructure, housing and Construction, power, oil and gas and tourism sectors in Pakistan.

The government has offered incentive packages for investment in these sectors and the investors friendly environment has been created by providing foolproof security to the investors in all parts of the country.

The president said that Pakistan could also benefit from the Turkish experience of educational reforms as long term measure to reform militant mindset to defeat militancy.

The President said that Pakistan looked forward to the Turkish Prime Minister''s forthcoming visit to Pakistan that would take the level of strategic cooperation between the two countries to new heights.

The President appreciated the support of Turkish government at the FODP meetings and the pledge of US$100 million, out of which $10million has already been transferred and hoped for early disbursement of the remaining amount.

The Turkish minister said that his country is keen to further strengthen the bilateral economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. He said there was great potential to raise the level of trade between the two countries to 2 billion dollars in the next few years. He assured continued support of his government in Pakistan’s fight against militants and the FODP initiative.
