Benazir Bhutto

Autobiography:
The political leader Benazir Bhutto, who was the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has personally inspired me. She was born in Karachi, Pakistan, on June 21, 1953. She was assassinated in an election campaign in Rawalpindi, Pakistan on December 27, 2007. At the time of her birth, her father was the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Being the eldest in her family, she began her leadership at a young age; she made many political visits with her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. She completed her basic education in Pakistan and afterwards, she went to United States of America to get a higher education from 1969 to 1973. She went to England to study Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Lady Margaret Hall in Oxford University. She also acquired education in International Law and Diplomacy. She then attended St Catherine’s College, Oxford and in December 1976 she was elected as a president of Oxford Union.
She was elected twice as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and from 1993 to 1996. She was the first female Prime Minister of any Muslim country in the world. Her father was the founder of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which has been the most influential party in Pakistan. This party was run by Benazir Bhutto after her father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s execution by a Military General Zia-Ul- Haq in 1979. She married Asif Ali Zardari who is the current president of Pakistan. She gave birth to three children: Bilawal, Bakhtwar, and Aseefa. Pakistan Peoples Party was under Benazir’s Bhutto supervision for more than 20 years. Successfully, she was the only Asian woman of this Union’s president to date. Later on, she received an Honorary LL.D degree from the University of Toronto.
Famous Leader:
She was the first woman Prime Minister of a Muslim country in the world. This made her a very famous and an outstanding leader in the world. Her popularity was very important in Islamic world and throughout the international community as she was elected of Prime Minister of Pakistan two times in the 20[SUP]th[/SUP] century. Moreover, she was the head of the largest political party in Pakistan. The popularity with Pakistanis was due to her courage and confident to speak on behalf of the Pakistani people. She always stood up for the rights of poor, women, and those in need of necessities of life. Countries from Canada to Japan knew how great of a leader she was. She stands to be one of the most influential leaders in Asia. She stands to be one of the most effective personalities among Mahatma Gandhi, Quaid-e-Azam and other great leaders. She was also well known due to her great confident for working side by side with men. At the same time, she presented the women population in the country while she had to work with predominantly male leaders. It was a great journey of leadership for her to represent her country in the international community. People from outside of Pakistan always admired her of her great work to bring development, education, and democracy in Pakistan. She was also well known due to management by exception. Management was to focus attention on substantial differences between actual and desired performance. Actual performance in Pakistan was dictatorship, poverty, and discrimination of rights of citizens. She desired to change this performance into democracy, well living standard, and equal rights for everyone.
Mission:
Benazir Bhutto’s mission started long ago with her father’s policies towards Pakistan’s development. As PPP was founded and run by her father Zulifqar Ali Bhutto, Zulifqar Ali Bhutto made a slogan for his party saying, “Roti, Kapra, aur Makan,” in Urdu, meaning food, clothing, and shelter for everyone in the country. This was the main agenda for PPP that was literally made to bring development in Pakistan. After her father’s death, she committed with this basic idea of development to her people along with resolving so many other issues. The need was to provide basic necessities of life to every individual in the state. Her strategy was to change the entire political system in her country. After some time, she was sent into exile because of corruption and money laundering. Even though she was in exile, she had done a tremendous job on competitive advantage. Her competitive advantage was to organize and to run her party in Pakistan while she was in exile. Her strategic intent was to unify her party against dictatorship and extremism in the country. This shows why she came back after her exile to fight against dictatorship and extremism. Her strategy formulation was totally based on the betterment of the people. When she was elected as a Prime Minister for the first time, she made woman health workers, woman police officers, and woman welfare programs to support and gain sympathy for the women in the country who were abused by different means of violence. Her mission was also a cost leadership strategy as she worked hard to change the condition of the poor people in her country. In 1990, she provided electricity and access to clean water in rural areas of the country. She also provided small loans and tools to poor farmers to grow food on their agricultural land. One of her top priorities was strategic leadership, as she desired to continuously bring change to the country also by refining, and improving strategies and their implementations. In 1991, she implemented the concept of accepting criticism from the opposition and perceiving it in a productive manner.
Characteristics:
Benazir Bhutto was very charismatic and enthusiastic leader in the history of Pakistan. She always spoke as a very well experienced leader. As well as she always said many interesting things during her speech. People love to listen to her in a campaign while she addressed her love and commitment to the betterment of the society. People always felt so much care and love in her words. The leadership style exercised by Bhutto was a democratic style. She always spoke on behalf of democracy, and different parties working together to form one government. One of her quote in a press conference was, Leadership is to do what is right by educating and inspiring an electorate, empathizing with the moods, needs, wants, and aspirations of humanity” ¸She always favored democracy leadership in the country rather than dictatorship or military rule. As the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, Benazir Bhutto was a woman of immense personal courage and bravery. Knowing, as she did, the threats to her life, the previous attempt at assassination, she risked everything in her attempt to win democracy in Pakistan, and she has been assassinated by cowards afraid of democracy”. This describes that Bhutto was well admired of being a brave woman to fight so many propagandas against her. She survived many assassination attempts and dealt with so many pressuring threats which made her a symbol of courage. This symbol represented as she gave her life while fighting for democracy in her country. She also had a great sense of integrity, as she was very honest, credible, and consistent in putting values into action. She was always credited for her work that she continued for her party after her father’s death. She was also a leader to hold an authentic leadership in her. She was very a positive self-regulated leader. She was always credited from her people for being an authentic leader.
Motivation:
Benazir Bhutto had wonderful skills to motivate people and to get all together to fulfill one task. She had a great sense of inspiring people to achieve one goal. In 1996, when she was sent to exile, she did not lose her hope and well wishes for her people. It was hard for her to be in exile after serving as the head of the state. She was an excellent leader to have external control. She controlled her party in Pakistan by directing the Chief Executive of her party Yousuf Gillani who is the current Prime Minister of Pakistan. She directed supervision on her party in Pakistan and in international community to get a better output standard. In 1998, she held few important meetings in Dubai and England to organize her party in order to get back to Pakistan. She always wanted to be the leader of her country once again in the future. Her objectives were to unify her party and the people of Pakistan to fight against poverty, dictatorship, and military rule. She encouraged people through an organized plan to resolve their issues within their country. In one of her speeches in UNO, she said, “I dream of a Pakistan, of an Asia, of a world, where we can commit our social resources to the development of human life and not to its destruction.” This illustrates that how she wanted to resolve the crisis in Pakistan. She always made examples to show people to not be afraid of anything while they fight for the betterment of the society. This inspired people to take her as the great leader of their country. The decisions made by her were always in favor of Pakistan and the future of its people. She always motivated the people by advocating the freedom of their choice and freedom of their life. As she said, “ I am what I am today because of a beloved father who left me independent means, to make independent decisions, free of male prejudice in my society, or even in my family”. This illustrates that how she had advocated the rights of individual and freedom in ones life. She had a vision to talk as a leader while feeling as a citizen of her country. All of her motivation was dedicated towards betterment of the society; therefore, she was very successful to motivate people on her side. In 2007, when she went back to her country, more than 75% of the population supported her in her political campaigns and by other means. Her party still stands as the largest party in Pakistan. She had a great deal of satisfier factor, as she held responsible for the advancement and the personal growth of the Pakistani people.
Management Style:
Benazir Bhutto was known as the great leader throughout her management style, as she had managed and grown her party as the largest political party (PPP) of Pakistan. She had an excellent sense of management information system. She always knew what her party member wanted to see as the political agenda for the country. Throughout her entire political career, she always listened to the ideas of her party chiefs, chief executives, and other managing directors of PPP. One time, the chief executive Mr. Gillani concerned that she should have political campaigns in the country while she is in exile. She liked this idea and concerned with other party members. When all the party members agreed upon this idea, she finally ordered the political campaigns in the country while she was in exile. This was a great example of decision support systems. This resulted in a huge support from the country and more than 75% of the population supported her when she returned to Pakistan in October 2007. She had the great ability of problem solving. In 1991, she organized few of the meetings with India. She visited India to have a negotiation with Indian leaders on all sorts of conflicts including the major problem of Kashmir being claimed by both countries. She managed to solve conflict resolution with the Indian leaders. She urged India to sign the resolution with Pakistan to release all the prisoners from both countries, this lead to a great friendship and healthy relationship with India. She described conflict management in an interview with the press on Pakistan and India’s relation, she said, 'Conflict management' means agreeing to disagree on some issues, as China and India do on the Boundary issue, without allowing it to impede other issues where progress can be made.” This tells us how she was the critical thinker to reduce all kind of issues with India. She had a great accommodation of bringing peace, harmony, and friendship between both countries as she said in the same interview, “We need to signal to the world community that we are committed to the peaceful management, peaceful dialogue and peaceful solution to the outstanding problems between us”. This was her great vision to see peace on both sides of the border in India and Pakistan.
Why I chose this leader:
Finally, I chose Benazir Bhutto as my famous leader due to several reasons. She was unique compare to other leaders around the world. She stands out as one of the great leaders in Asia in the 20[SUP]th[/SUP] century. She was the first woman to be the Prime Minister of any Muslim country in the world. She was not a man with so many opportunities and support in this manly world. In the time of period, when this world is dominated by men and every single aspect of life is controlled by men, she stood out to make a difference. She differentiated the rights of woman in this man-controlled world. She always looked forward in order to achieve her goals and objectives. She was always confident and positive about her achievements. She never felt disappointed with any of the barriers in her life. At the same time, she always had so many troubles in her way to success. People had attempted to kill her and planned her death many times before her assassination. I am personally inspired by the courage and the great deal of discipline that she had. Her education level was also outstanding compare to many other leaders in Pakistan. I also get inspired by the fact that she was the first Asian woman as the President of Oxford Union. All these characteristics are example to follow in one’s life. I see her as a very outstanding leader and an extraordinary woman of 20[SUP]th[/SUP] century. One of the most things that I found inspiring in her is her ability to help poor people and to speak on behalf of those in needs. She was clearly a good-hearted and well-meaning person. It deeply saddens me that her message was lost upon the country that she briefly ruled. If there is anything after death, I hope that she has taken her place among all of the goodhearted people in the world's history.
