The hall, covering the monarchic court and state governing in the 16-17th centuries, displays a great variety of things belonging to the first Russian tsar, Ivan IV the Terrible. There were 2 periods in his governing. At first, he wanted to create an effective state governing system, ensure the unity of Russia and improve the international situation with the help of reforms only. But very soon the tsar changed his politics: he started to achieve his goals using terror and repressions. This period in the history of Russia is called “oprichnina”.
Here you can see two works written during the Ivan the Terrible’s governing. The first one describes the years of his governing and justifies his cruel methods. They say the tsar himself edited this book. The second one illustrates the Russian history in a form of ”stairs”. Each stair corresponds to the governing of one or another prince.
Here are also some of the Ivan the Terrible’s clothes, very rare thing.
Tsar Alexey Mihailovich’s portrait. He’s depicted sitting in a majestic posture, his clothes shine with gold and jewelry. It’s one the earliest Russian tsars’ full-dress portraits painted in the 1670s. It’s known, Alexey Mihailovich sat for the artist several times.
Some of them have inscriptions with the names of their makers. Russian artillery was way better in its quality and quantity than any Eupopean country’s at that time.
