Viral infections of the respiratory system are common and an itchy throat is one of the main symptoms. Other viral diseases that could cause similar symptoms are influenza, common cold, measles and mononucleosis.

Bacterial Diseases:
Any bacterial infection affecting the pharyngo-laryngeal region can lead to a sore throat. Some examples are: inflammation of the tonsils, larynx, epiglottis and pharynx, which are generally the affected areas during a sore throat episode.

Other bacteria that could be the causative agents are: streptococcus pyogenes and arcanobacterium haemolyticum. The less common bacteria that could cause sore throat are gonorrhea and chlamydia.

Allergens:
Dust, pollen, mold and other airborne allergens can cause respiratory infections, leading to symptoms of scratchy throat. Allergy tests can help identify if a person is allergic to specific substances like dander, pollen and the like.

These substances can be avoided by making small changes like, avoiding going out on a rainy day to avoid exposure to allergens like pollen, as this is when the pollen count increases drastically.

Other illnesses:
Gastro-esophageal reflux as a result of indigestion or excess acid secretion, can create soreness of throat. Air pollution, low humidity, smoking, even stress and burnout can cause a sore throat too.
