Women who wear hijab coverings often keep them on whenever they are in public—even swimming, as this woman is doing off Saudi Arabia's coast. Like many Saudi women, she is wearing a head scarf called a niqab and an abaya. An abaya covers the entire body except the head, feet, and hands.

Chadors are a type of hijab covering that leave the face entirely exposed. Like burqas, chadors are loose-fitting garments without arm slits; the wearer holds the cloak together with her hands. Most of these girls, on a school field trip to the Friday Mosque in Isfahan, Iran, leave their chadors open to eat and take photos. The girl at the top right holds her chador closed.

Not all hijab coverings are dark. The cloth used on these chadors (seen on women traveling by donkey in rural Iran) are brightly colored floral designs.

This head scarf, with open eye slats, is called a niqab/parda. Bandari women from Qeshm Island, Iran, integrate the niqab with a long, typically green-and-gold garment with bright patterns.

A half-niqab/parda is simply a head scarf tied to cover the face below the nose. Half-niqabs often have thinner veils than the sturdy fabric typical of other hijab coverings. This young woman, dusted with the pink pigment typical of the festival of Holi, is celebrating in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Like all garments, hijab coverings are fashionable items. These mannequins, in a storefront in Sulawesi, Indonesia, display different colors of the head scarf called khimar or simply "hijab."

Expressions of hijab vary widely within the Muslim world. Women are required to wear some version of hijab coverings in Saudi Arabia and Iran. In Turkey, another Muslim nation, wearing hijab coverings is strictly limited to head scarves. Malaysia, where these women are worshipping, has no requirements or restrictions.

Women in hijab coverings are a very familiar sight in the Muslim world. These students at Carnegie Mellon University's campus in Doha, Qatar, wear head scarves and jilbabs. Jilbabs are long, coat-like garments.

Hijab/parda is an Islamic concept of modesty and privacy, usually expressed through women's clothes. (Men also follow hijab customs, although the concept is more associated with women.) Hijab is often a cultural, not a religious, construct. There is not a strict, single interpretation, and many Muslim women do not wear special coverings at all. The mother of this Saudi family wears a full abaya, for example, while her daughters are unveiled.
