How to Install or Upgrade to a New RIM BlackBerry Operating System (OS)

Research In Motion (RIM) is constantly developing and testing new software and applications for your BlackBerry. Keeping up to date with the newest operating system (OS) software for your smartphone ensures that you have access to all the latest and greatest features and performance tweaks. With the official release of BlackBerry OS v4.5 on the horizon—various beta, or test, versions of the software are already bouncing around the Web—we thought this would be a great time for a BlackBerry OS tutorial.
What follows is our step-by-step guide on how to upgrade your BlackBerry's OS, or install a different version, as well as how to prepare beforehand to make the process run as smoothly as possible.
To start a new operating system install, you'll need your BlackBerry, an Internet-connected PC, a USB cable and about an hour and half of free time—50 minutes or an hour for the upgrade process and 30 minutes or catch-up time afterwards. Mac users beware: RIM doesn't currently offer the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software for Apple computers; however, industrious Mac owners running Parallels and who have a copy of Windows have been able to upgrade their BlackBerrys via Macs, though the process can be a bit clumsy.
If you've got all the necessary tools listed above, the BlackBerry OS install process should be a breeze. Let's get started.
How to Install or Upgrade to a New BlackBerry Operating System

1) Download New BlackBerry OS Software
First things first, you'll want to download the new BlackBerry OS and save it to your PC. To determine what OS version you're currently running, click the Options icon on your BlackBerry home screen and select About. Your OS version will be listed as a series of numbers after a lowercase V (v4.2.2.184) on the first screen. You can also employ the Help Me screen shortcut to determine your current OS version by hitting ALT, SHIFT and the letter H.
To obtain the latest operating system for your BlackBerry device, first check your wireless carrier's website. This is the best way to get official RIM OS software. Your carrier may ask you to login to download the software, so you might need to create an online account if you haven't already done so. Once logged in, locate the system upgrades section, check to see if there's an OS version that's more recent than the one you're currently running, and if so, download and save it to your PC's desktop.

Save the latest BBOS onto your Windows-powered computer
If you decide to download and install an unofficial version of the BlackBerry OS, you should beware that you're doing so at your own risk. Beta operating systems are not officially released for good reason: They're often full of bugs and could potentially void your warranty or worse, render your BlackBerry unusable. (Read, "How to Reload the Operating System on a Nuked BlackBerry," if you ever find yourself with a bricked 'Berry. If you do decide to install unofficial software and it's from a carrier that isn't your own, you should be sure to ditch the software's vendor XML file before beginning installation. To do so, open your PC's Program Files > Common Files > Research In Motion > AppLoader and then delete the Vendor file, which is in XML format. If you don't delete the other vendor's file, the software won't be able to install the software on your carrier-locked device.
2) Download and Install the Latest BlackBerry Desktop Manager Software
Next you should ensure that your PC is running the latest version of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, which is v4.5.
To check which version of Desktop Manager you currently have, you should launch the program via Windows Start menu > All Programs > BlackBerry > Desktop Manager. Then click the Help tab on the main screen and choose About BlackBerry Desktop Manager. The software version will be listed on the General tab.
BlackBerry Desktop Manager version 4.5
If you're not running Desktop Manager v4.5, visit RIM's site and download and install the latest version of the software.

3) Prepare for New OS By Noting Apps, Services or Setting That Could be Affected
Installing a New BlackBerry OS will return some of your custom settings to the default options and may require you to log back into and unlock certain applications. For instance, your font family, font style and size will revert to default settings after the OS install, so you may want to go into Options > Screen/Keyboard settings to make note of your custom settings.
Many third-party apps will also require you to reenter your user name and password, so you may want to make note of which apps require a login and make sure you've access to the necessary information. For example, your Viigo RSS reader will prompt you for login information the first time you try to use it, as will Facebook for BlackBerry, your Twitter client and the Flickr app. I also noticed that the color of my jazzy new CrackBerry launcher changed from orange to cyan…
It's a good idea to switch back to an official RIM theme if you're using a third-party option, at least at first, because some features of non-official themes won't work properly on the new OS.
And it's worth noting that applications are meant to run on specific OS version so they may not work at all after you upgrade. The Freedom Universal Bluetooth Keyboard, which I reviewed for CrackBerry in May, functions along with an application that will only work on BlackBerry OS v4.0 through v4.2.

4) Open New BlackBerry OS and Begin Installation
After you've prepared for the changes that come along with a new BlackBerry OS, you'll want to begin the installation process. First, close all related applications and services on your PC and launch the .exe file. Choose Run and select the appropriate setup language.
The InstallShield Wizard for BlackBerry will then appear. You should click Next and then on the following screen choose the country in which you're currently located. Accept the terms of service and hit "Next" again. When the install process is complete, the program will ask you if you want to start the BlackBerry Desktop software. Fill in the check box next to this option and then hit "Finish."

Install OS4.5 onto your computer
When the Desktop Manager software opens, plug your device into the PC via USB cord. (If for some reason, the desktop manager software does not launch after a few minutes, go to your Windows Start menu > All Programs > BlackBerry > Desktop Manager.) You'll then see a dialogue box that tells you it's searching for device application updates and a few seconds later another box will appear asking if you want to install the available upgrades. Click Update Now and a summary page will appear detailing the specific applications that will be affected.
From there, hit the Options tab beneath the Data Preservation and Device Backup heading and ensure that the Backup Device Data Automatically During the Installation Process box is checked. Then hit OK.
You can also click on the Advanced tab on the right side of the Desktop Manager screen to add or update applications that weren't included in the default list. For instance, if you deleted your BlackBerry Messenger app in the past but now want it back, you can hit Advanced and fill in the check box next to BlackBerry Messenger and the program will be installed along with your new OS.
Application Loader Updates Page
Finally, you should click Next again, and you'll see an Application Loader summary page that explains how your device will need to be wirelessly activated and registered with your carrier after the new OS is installed—don't fret, this should happen automatically—and provides a brief summary of the installation process. Hit Finish, grab a frosty beverage and/or good book and sit back and relax while you're new OS is installed. As mentioned above, this may take awhile so don't worry if the progress bar seems to be sticking on the "Connecting to the Device" stage—one of the final steps in the upgrade process.
Summary Page. Click Finish and let the Update begin!
If you're installing an operating system that's older than your current software, you'll want to download the OS to your PC and launch the .exe file just as described above. But when you plug your device into your PC after opening the Desktop Manager, the app won't find any updates and you'll have to instigate the install process yourself. To do so, click the Application Loader icon on the Desktop Manager home screen and then click the Start box on the right side of the screen, beneath Update Applications. The software will then search for updates and won't be able to find any. On the following screen, click the Advanced tab under Device Application Selection, make sure the list of applications on the next screen includes all programs you wish to include in the install and hit Next again. Choose to backup your application data on the following screen and hit Finish to begin the install.
You'll know your new OS is installed successfully when the Desktop Manager's Update Complete screen appears and your device's radio turns back on. Shortly after the process finishes up, you should receive a message in you inbox to let you know your device is registered with your carrier's network. If you don't receive such a message, resend your device's e-mail service books. You can send service books in two ways, using either your BlackBerry itself or your carrier's BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) page. To send service books via BlackBerry, open your E-Mail Settings/Set-Up Internet E-mail icon, log in if prompted, and click Service Books option under the Settings heading. On the following page, send the books by hitting Service Books again.
Close out the Desktop Manager, disconnect your BlackBerry and you're good.

Done - OS Successfully Updated!!!

Notes
- If you use any BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) accounts, you likely want to resend your e-mail service books even if you're device was automatically reregistered. This ensures that you're taking advantage of any related tweaks that may have been included in the software update.
- Immediately following your upgrade, you'll be prompted to log back into a number of applications but some you'll need to manually open to enter your account information. If you have a media card installed, you'll also be asked whether or not you want to turn your BlackBerry's mass storage mode on, regardless of your previous settings. You'll also be asked if you want to run through the BlackBerry Setup Wizard.
- If you're on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) you should check in with an IT representative before attempting to upgrade your smartphone's handheld software, because some IT policies can block or partially block a new OS install.

The iPhone and iPod touch are revolutionary devices which can perform a seemingly unlimited amount of tasks, but some new users may not be aware they can do even more to improve their overall user experience.
With the iPhone selling like hotcakes all across the world, millions of people are becoming familiar with and learning just how powerful Apple’s Multi-Touch platform really is. While this comprehensive list of tips and lesser known features may not appeal to the die-hard Apple fans who are on the cutting-edge of every move the company makes, new and casual users should find at least a few gems they weren’t aware of before. If you have a helpful hint for the iPhone or iPod touch that isn’t listed here, post a comment to share it with us!
1.) Save images in Safari and Mail
If you come across an image you like and want to keep while browsing the web or viewing email, simply tap and hold it for a few seconds. A menu will appear with the option to save it to your camera roll in the Photos section.

Save images in Safari and Mail
2.) Web Clips
Similar to what you can do on a Mac with Dashboard, Safari on the iPhone & iPod touch lets you add a web page to your home screen. When viewing a web page, press the + button on the bottom of the screen to bring up the following options: Add Bookmark, Add to Home Screen, and Mail Link to this Page. When you select the 2nd button, it will remember your exact position on the page and automatically generate a thumbnail icon that appears on your home screen.

Web Clips
3.) Don’t discriminate web extensions
When typing a web address in Safari, the keyboard features a .com button so you don’t have to type it out character-by-character. But what if the site you want to go to doesn’t end with .com? By holding the .com button down, it will expand to show .net, .edu, and .org buttons. Keep your finger on the screen and slide to the desired extension, and release.

Don’t discriminate web extensions
4.) Quickly switch between keyboards
The great thing about a completely touch screen keyboard is that its content can change based on the requirements of the current application. When you press the @123 key to access characters such as numbers, the ampersand, the question mark, etc. it stays on this secondary keyboard until you press the ABC key to go back. If you only need to insert one of these characters, eliminate that extra keystroke by pressing and holding the @123 key and sliding your finger across the screen to the desired key. When you let go the normal keyboard layout will return.
5.) Screenshots
One of the coolest new features of the 2.0 software update is the ability to take screenshots of whatever you’re doing on your iPhone or iPod touch. To do so, press the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time and a white flash will display on the screen. To view your screenshots, go to the camera roll in the Photos applications.
6.) Save battery life
If you find yourself fighting to conserve battery life, one easy way to cut down on power usage is to decrease your email fetch time. Go to Settings > Fetch New Data and choose the time interval of your choice: every 15 minutes, 30 minutes, hour, or manually. Experiment with these settings and see which one offers the best performance for you.

Save battery life
7.) Move or remove icons on the home screen
You can organize the icons on your home screen(s) however you like, including moving them to and from the dock. Tap and hold any icon until they all begin to wiggle in place. To move an icon, tap, hold, and drag it to the desired location. If you’d like to remove an application altogether, press the little X attached to its icon (note this will only work for downloaded apps, not Apple’s built-in apps).
8.) Keyboard shortcuts
In Settings > General > Keyboard you can enable a number of keyboard shortcuts to make typing a little easier. You can turn on Auto-Capitalization (takes effect when starting a new sentence), Caps Lock (double tap the Shift button on the keyboard and it will turn blue), and “.” Shortcut (double tap the space bar or press the space bar once with two fingers).

Keyboard shortcuts
9.) iPod music controls
Even though both the iPhone and iPod touch are multi-use devices with a growing number of functions, they are first and foremost still members of the iPod family. Pressing the Home button twice, regardless of what application you’re using or if the device is locked, will bring up iPod music controls so you can conveniently pause, skip songs, or adjust the volume.

iPod music controls
10.) Go straight to the top
If you’re in an application that requires you to scroll a lot (like a long web page in Safari), it can be tiresome to make your way back to the top. That is, unless you give a quick tap to the status bar (where the clock and battery indicator are). This will automatically bring you right back to the top of whatever screen you’re on.
11.) Force quit a frozen app
Occasionally an application unexpectedly freezes up and does not respond to any of your input. You can usually force quit to resolve this issue this by pressing and holding the Home button for 6-7 seconds.
12.) Wipe it clean
I had a friend whose iPod touch would not sync with iTunes and then received an error when a restore was attempted. These problems are often caused by corrupt data and content on the device. We were able to resolve the issue by going to Settings > General > Erase All Content & Settings. Be aware this will wipe out all of your content and settings, essentially forcing you to start from scratch.
13.) Two finger scroll
When you’re viewing a frame or large text box on a web page in Safari, you might notice that scrolling with your finger moves the entire page, not the content within that frame or box. To avoid this, use two fingers to scroll within the box and the containing page will stay stationary.
14.) Preview links
In Mail and Safari you can get some information about where a link will take you before you actually click on it. Just press and hold the link and a balloon with pop up telling you the exact URL it targets.
15.) Save emails as drafts
It’s not exactly obvious how to save emails as drafts on the iPhone and iPod touch because there isn’t really a clear option to do it. Instead, when you’re composing a message you need to press the Cancel button and then you’re given the option to save it.

Save emails as drafts
16.) Sleep after specified amount of time
The Clock application on the iPhone and iPod touch is surprisingly versatile, offering a World Clock, Stopwatch, Alarm, and Timer. One of the interesting things the Timer can do is put your device to sleep after a specified amount of time by going to the “When Timer Ends” field and choosing Sleep. This is great if you listen to music at night as you doze off.

Sleep after specified amount of time
17.) Swipe to delete videos and emails
When viewing your lists of Mail and Videos, you can delete items individually by sliding your finger across it (left or right), which causes a Delete button will appear. Especially in the case of deleting videos, this can help conserve space and will not permanently remove it from your iTunes library (unless it is a rented movie).

Swipe to delete videos and emails
18.) Call forwarding made easy
You can set your iPhone to forward calls to another phone by going to Settings > Phone > Call Forwarding and entering the desired phone number (with area code).
19.) Hide yourself from caller ID
If you don’t want to allow your phone number and name to appear on other peoples’ caller ID when you call them, simply go to Settings > Phone > Show My Caller ID on your iPhone and switch it off.
20.) Scientific calculator
A scientific calculator with more advanced functions is available on the iPhone and iPod touch by opening Calculator and turning your screen sideways.

Scientific calculator
21.) Move the text insertion point
While typing you may realize you made a typo and need to go back to fix it. No problem! Press your finger to the screen and drag it to the character you want to change. A magnifying glass will appear to help you see exactly where the cursor is and will disappear when you release your finger.

Move the text insertion point
22.) Enable parental controls
Parents who want to keep their young technology users from doing anything potentially questionable can turn on Parental Controls by going to Settings > General > Enable Restrictions and choosing which functions to not allow, such as listening to explicit music, browsing YouTube, and more. You will need to set a special passcode, making it impossible to get around the restrictions unless the passcode is entered.

Enable parental controls
23.) Tap to navigate home screens
In addition to swiping left or right to navigate between multiple home screens, you can also tap the lower corners of the screen’s black background (right above the Dock) once to move to the next or previous home screen.
24.) Swipe to navigate your music
While a song is playing in iPod mode, swipe your finger to the right over the album cover art to go back to your most recent song list (album tracks, playlist, etc.). This saves time if you’re multi-tasking and not able to precisely hit the Back arrow button.
25.) Avoid cancelled syncs
If you’re syncing the iPhone with your computer, the sync could be cancelled midway through if you receive a phone call. To avoid this big time waster, temporarily put the phone in Airplane mode (by going to Settings) before you sync and then change it back to normal when you’re done.
26.) Correct the auto-correct
Every once in a while the auto-correct software, which fixes commonly made spelling errors, gets confused and wants to fix something that’s not actually wrong. If you come across this often, you can teach the auto-correct to learn the word you’re trying to type by tapping the X that appears next to the suggested correction. It may take a few attempts, but it will eventually learn over time.
27.) Unplug to pause music playback
If you unplug your headphones while listening to a song, the iPod will automatically pause playback.
28.) Decline a call
Most iPhone users know they can silence a call by pressing the Sleep or Volume buttons once, but you can also decline a call and send it directly to voicemail by pressing the Sleep button twice.[DOUBLEPOST=1350106788][/DOUBLEPOST]

[DOUBLEPOST=1350308170][/DOUBLEPOST]How To Clear Browsing History And Cache On Android Phones

http://www.groovypost.com/mobile/

Even if you’re surfing the internet on your new Android phone, from time to time it’s a good idea to clear out the history and cache. Clearing out the cache can improve performance, and clearing your history and auto-complete information can help improve security. Good news, the process is easy and quick so let’s take a look at this Quick-Tip.
Step 1

While in the Android browser, Tap the external menu button.
(On my Samsung Galaxy S it was located at the bottom left corner of the screen, but this can vary depending on your device.)

The menu should now appear on the screen, Tap the More option from that list.

Step 3

Tap the Settings option from the list.

Step 4

Scroll down the settings window until you get to Privacy settings.
There are quite a few things to clear here:
  • Clear cache
  • Clear history
  • Clear all cookie data
  • Clear form data
  • Clear location access

Step 5

Click on everything in Step 4 above, a prompt will appear for each one. Tap OK to confirm the deletion each time.

Step 6 – Optional: Clear Passwords, and Nuke

There are two additional options at the bottom of the settings page you can opt to do if you like.
One is the Clear passwords button, that will just erase all passwords and account information that is saved on your android device. This isn’t necessary, but it can keep people from accessing your online services if your phone falls into the wrong hands.
The other option is Reset to default aka the Nuke button. One Press on the nuke button and your android browser will revert back to factory settings, clearing out everything else at the same time. I would suggest this, but it is a pain to change the browser home page so I never use this button.

Done!

Ho to backup iphone ios
iCloud and iTunes can back up most data on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Backed-up information includes purchased music, TV shows, apps, and books*; photos and video in the Camera Roll; device settings (for example, Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts); app data; Home screen and app organization; Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS), ringtones, and more. Media files synced from your computer aren’t backed up, but can be restored by syncing with iTunes.
* Backup of purchased music is not available in all countries. Backup of purchased TV shows occurs only in the United States. Previous purchases may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.

Update your device wirelessly (available in iOS 5 and later)

    1. Ensure your device is connected to a power source. To avoid potential data costs connect your device to a Wi-Fi network.
    2. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. iOS will automatically check for available updates.
    3. If an update is available* you can tap Download to download the update.
    4. After the download has completed tap Install to update your iOS.
    5. If you leave the update to download in the background, once the download has finished you will receive a notification saying an update is available for your device. Tapping Details will take you to Settings > General > Software Update. Tap Install Now to install the iOS update. If you decide to leave the installation for later Settings will display notification badge until the update has been installed.
* Some iOS updates may not available as over-the-air updates. VPN or proxy connections may prevent your device from contacting the iOS update servers.

Update your device using iTunes

Additional Information

Tips for updating your iOS device

  • Ensure that your device is backed up to iCloud or back up with iTunes before updating. Find more information about backup your iphone is up.
  • When updating from iOS 4.3.x or earlier, see ios 4: updating your device to ios 5 or later.
Unable to update, not enough available storage

When updating wirelessly, your iOS device needs enough available space to download and install the update. If "Download and Install" is grayed out or you see the message "This update requires at least x.x GB of available storage", use one of the following options to update:
  • Use iTunes to download and install the update instead
or
  • Remove content you no longer need from your device, including:
    • Movies or TV shows from the Videos app. On iPhone and iPod touch, use the "swipe to delete" gesture. On iPad, either tap Edit or tap and hold on a video, and then tap "x" to delete.
    • Apps you no longer use. Tap and hold until they jiggle, and then tap the "x" to delete.

[DOUBLEPOST=1350308170][/DOUBLEPOST]How To Clear Browsing History And Cache On Android Phones

Done!

Wow....thanks for sharing......it really works...{}{43r5
